naspu

July 13, 2005

NASPU. For a while I thought this was a real word. My mother and father used to chase us around, my brother and I, when it was “time”, that being around 3 in the afternoon. By then we would be all grimy and sweaty; our clothes were a different color; our hair had one too many layers of oil. If it was really bad, we would get an instant bath. Otherwise, NASPU lang.

Years later, many years later, when I realized that NASPU was punas backwards, I wondered if anyone else used the term. Did my parents make a sniglet? I wonder still. How popular was it? Was it on the same level as haybols or etneb or ermats? Or was it nothing more than a made - up word that had an effect on nobody but the Laurels of Kamias?

To me, Naspu brings back memories of black and white tv with plais “remote” (it’s not off `til that white dot fades away completely), Piling - Piling Pelikula, ABC’s Wide World of Sports, Voltes V, green face towels (to match the ground floor bathroom door), Lady, Lord and the other dachsund/askals, Binatog and many, many other things.

I really thought it was a word. Well, to me it is. And then some.
